FAQ
What should I wear to class?
Loose comfy clothing is best and flat soled shoes if possible - such as plimsols. Trainers tend to be too bulky for tai chi and make the foot unstable. Eventually you can purchase our uniform if you wish - your teacher can advise you about this.
What should I bring with me?
An open mind! Tai chi will almost certainly not be what you thought it would be. Everything that is taught in class is a piece of a much bigger picture which can take many years to reveal itself.
How much does it cost?
Class prices vary depending on the venue but it is usually between £5 and £8. Weekly classes range from 1 to 2 hours. Contact the individual teacher for more details. A discount may apply for prepayment of a block of consecutive weeks. Saturday courses with Mark are £15 (2 hour class) and £25 (4 hour class).
Is there a membership fee?
Membership is currently free. This also includes your grading card if you wish to grade. Membership covers all classes on this website so take your card along and try any class.
I have an injury/illness, can I still do Tai Chi?
Generally yes, but its sensible to discuss any new exercise regime with your doctor first. Its also good to make your teacher aware of any health complaints that may restrict your movements or medications you may need during a class or in an emergency. Our classes are not competitive and our teachers encourage you to work to your own ability so there is no pressure if you need to take a bit longer on some aspect of the training. We encourage you to relax into movements rather than forcing the body.
What fitness level is needed?
Some classes are more suited to beginners or older people whilst at other classes you will be expected to be able to sit cross-legged on the floor for short periods, touch your toes etc. Again, contact the individual teacher in your area to discuss with them whether or not they think their class will be accessible to you.
Are there Gradings?
We hold regular gradings for which no additional fees are charged. A grade is a reflection of the standard reached by the student and a reward for hard work and commitment. It is not a source of income for the instructor. The early grades may be taken in class and the higher grades are usually taken on Saturday courses overseen by Mark Popplewell. You can train to be a tai chi teacher by progressing through these grades and taking our written and practical exams. For more information contact Mark
